They’re an interesting alternative to a 335i on the used market. No manual transmission option though, which sucks. Anyone have experience with these? I’m wondering if they’re significantly cheaper than their Bavarian counterparts for a reason, but I can’t dig up anything on the reliability front.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

As far as I’m concerned, these are a steal. They’re around $5000 less than a comparable 335. Which is awesome. I currently drive a heavier car with less power, and no ability to “manually” select gears whatsoever, so this would be an upgrade on all fronts. The +/- function on the AT would make me happy though. I do miss having a real third pedal.

So does anyone have any real world experience with the S60?

I don’t know about S60, but I do know that Oppo does S80.

I have an S80. I like it.

Volvos have the absolute best seat warmers in the industry. That’s one thing I know.

I am heart broken at the moment because I was given an insanely low price here at work for an ex-loaner 2014 S60 AWD T-6 with Polestar. I just got my XC90 and Z4.

I SHOULD HAVE WAITED!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They are basically the same as a Daewoo Magnus... or a Leyland Princess, but with AWD

A polestar!? UGH. Worth it for the little powder blue square alone. So rare, so cool

I like S80s too! Also an option, also reasonably priced. I already drive a massive sedan though so a slightly smaller one would be nice lol. But I could be won over.

My cousin has an S80 as a family car. I don't like it. Then again, being forced to sit in the middle seat with 4 others every time I've been in it may have influenced my opinion.

Volvo have poor resale value, non R Ford-era models goes from $50K to ZERO in about 10-12 years. It’s getting better under the Chinese ownership though.

A 335 is a much better car if your are looking for something fun to drive, Volvo aren’t. They are pretty much Swedish Buick’s.

The 335 might be 5k more now, but it will still be worth 5K more than the S60 in 2-3 years.

The 335i is a sport sedan. The S60 T6 is a Volvo. Turning radius of a Chevy Silverado, 60% weight over the nose, and a big ‘ol FWD bias in the AWD system. I think the S60 T6 is probably a better everyday commuting car, with enough power to pass just about everything you’ll see and good gas mileage, but I think it would be found lacking in the twisties.

T6 don’t get good MPGs and such a deficient turn radius doesn`t make for a great commuter/grocery getter.

There’s a reason they don’t sell much.

Yeah that’s not a good application for any sedan.

Yeahhh I wish I could do more sporty driving but I’m mostly a commuter. Unfortunately the Greater Boston Area is lacking in good roads, and many are appalling. Frost heaves and potholes galore, even in the suburbs. A tiny manual weekend car is in my future but for now I’d love to DD a fast Swedish couch.

No input, other than I'm probably going to start looking at S60s, too. So if they're trouble, we'll both be in the same boat together.

They’re so all-encompassing. The entire seat bottom and center of the backrest heats up. Even the Range Rover’s weren’t as good.

An average of 25mpg over 40,000 miles isn’t good? Damn, it’s hard being a 300hp AWD luxury sedan!

Volvo’s AWD is very much front biased; 80 to 90%.

TBH the only similarity Volvos have with BMWs is that both have four wheels, and I wouldn’t even consider buying any of the former.

But it has to be said Volvo’s seats are amazing. At least for daily driving, those have to be the best I’ve ever sat on.

Just judging from other opponauts experiences with fast-ish Volvos, they can be a PITA. This isn’t relevant data, and they might have bought the worst Craigslist “bargains”, but I have yet to see a “My Volvo runs fine” post. This is mostly the R versions, but still.

My parents have owned a number of modern Volvos. 2000 V70XC, first gen S40, first gen s60, first gen V50, final model year C70, and a 2014 S60 T6 AWD. I’ve driven them all, some were mine for a time, and my mother’s 2014 S60 is one of my favorite cars I’ve ever driven. I drive a 2008 135i con manuel, so this comparison is pretty apt for you (and I looked at some 335i’s).

Similarities: Comfort. Quickness. Great looking (I actually like the look of the S60 more than the E9x 335i). MPG’s are an afterthought, but neither are trucks. Cost of ownership can be very high if something breaks on either. Be sure to stay up on maintenance.

Differences:

Comfort: The Volvo is more comfortable than the BMW with the Sport Package. If you aren’t going to get the Sport package, then don’t bother with the BMW. I’ve driven 335i’s without the sport pack and they’re quick but they are flaccid. There’s really no point in having the power without the suspension and seats. The Volvo is outrageously comfortable. Volvo seats are not overrated. The suspension is surprisingly willing to have fun and it’s incredibly comfortable.

Speed: The BMW is faster and quicker. The T6 has plenty of power to get you in trouble anywhere. The T6 is such an improvement over all other modern Volvo engines I’ve driven that I was genuinely shocked how much fun I had with it.

Transmission: Auto only in the Volvo (that I know of). The BMW manual is awesome. Throw in a clutch stop and CDV delete and it’s damn near perfect. Dealbreaker for me, but 335i’s are getting harder to find with a stick. If the Volvo came in manual, I would strongly consider it.

AWD/RWD: If you get a 335i, get it in RWD, duh. The xDrive is still rear-biased, I think, RWD sports sedan is the reason for buying a BMW. The driving dynamics of RWD are just more fun. That said, the Volvo, while nose-heavy, actually steers pretty well. There’s far less understeer than just FWD, but you can notice it if you really push it. The Volvo AWD system will get you through anything with a good set of tires.

Happy to answer any other questions, have a long history of Volvos and now driving a 135i (with a TDI Golf and - gasp - Prius in between the Volvos and the current Bimmer).
